Biography

The syndenham body style was introduced by T & R Boote in 1853. It achieved instant popularity and thus was copied widely. The three potters (Livesley and Powell, Anthony Shaw and Edward Walley) decorated their Wrapped Sydenham versions with a variety of treatments. Collectors will find traditional Tea Leaf (Shaw) , Scallops (Walley) and Lustre Band (Livesley & Powell) motifs. FInials may also vary - Shaw may have a bud finial ahile Walley feature an acorn finial. Patton also made wares in this body style.

Biography

This is a beautiful pattern with thumbprint impressions surrounding the base of pieces and arched panels along the sides with embossed spriggs of wheat flaring upwards and out. Copper lustre or polychrome with copper lustre highlights the wheat shafts and other embossed elements on these pieces.

Body Style: Ceres Shape

Biography

Elsmore & Forster's very popular wheat style was widely copied by other potters, both British and Amrican. It is an extremely well potted line which is found in many elegant decorations. In addition to the copper lustre enhanced version, there are examples with cobalt, a lighter blue, green and gold lustre, a mustard yellow and even in a Rockingham glaze.

Potter: J & E Mayer

Biography

The brothers, Joseph and Ernest Mayer who founded the J. & E. Mayer pottery (1881-present), were British potters from a long line of Staffordshire potters.  They knew Tea Leaf and produced it in large quantities with copper lustre covering the brown underglaze motif, a rarity in American Tea Leaf.  Their Tea Leaf was called 'Luster Band and Sprig' as they had known it in England.
