Body Style: Classic Gothic

Biography

One of the earliest body styles to be decorated with copper lustre motifs, Classic Gothic is characterized by its octagonal shape. Pitchers and teapots have bracket handles, while sugar and vegetable dishes have spiraled ear handles.

Classic Gothic can be distinguidhed from its cousin, Full Panelled Gothic, by the eight panels which extend downward to a deep indentation just above the base.

Biography

One of the most popular of the early body styles, Grape Octagon has fluted octagonal panels and grape embossing at handle terminals and finials. Pitchers and teapots have distinctive B-shaped handles.

Body Style: Gothic Cameo

Biography

The cameo heads distinguish Walley pieces from other Gothic examples. Davenport also produced a seldom found mitten-shaped relish or pickle specimen of the Gothic Cameo body style. The Davenport pickle is the same deign as other Gothic Cameo relishes.

The fluted shell design with the elaborate cameo handle is most attractive.

Body Style: Lily-of-the-Valley

Biography

Embossed Lily-of-the-Valley designs cover the body surface forming a frame for the Tea Leaf motifs. This is undoubtedly one of Shaw's most beloved styles. Some accessory pieces, especially parts of chamber sets, are found with copper lustre bands but no motifs.

Body Style: Many Panelled Gothic

Biography

Anthony Shaw made this variation of the usually octagonal Gothic body style. The adult sugar bowl has a shaped base and eared handles. Some pieces have a very stylized tea leaf. The children's teapot has a large ringed handle and the child's creamer has a familiar C-shaped handle. The child's sugar bowl has eared handles like the adult version.

Pieces may be 12 sided or less, and varies, but always panelled or sided as you would expect for this body style!

Body Style: Lion's Head

Biography

This square body style is found in two versions: one is slightly bulbous while the other is quite flared. Both styles are characterized by leonine facial features in a medallion at handle corners and in the arch finial.

Biography

Pieces feature delicately embossed designs reflecting the influence of mid-eastern cultures. It was potted during the period of the British rule in Northern Africa, perhaps to celebrate the expansion of the British Empire.

Biography

This round style is characterized by deeply incised loops covering the entire surface of holloware pieces. The loop design is also adapted to handleless cups. Grand Loop is found with a variety of copper lustre treatments including unusual botanical motifs.

Body Style: Cockscomb Handle

Biography

The fancy cockscomb handle and high pedestal base make this an outstanding example of the body style sometimes called "Lantern." Usually found in mulberry or flow blue, they also made lines with Teaberry or copper lustre bands. It is attributed to Jacob Furnival.
