Potter: Willets Manufacturing Co

Biography

According to Marks of American Potters by Barber, Willets Manufacturing Co. purchased works formerly operated by Wm Young & Sons in 1879.  On stone china the stamped mark of the Arms of Great Britain.  In 1884 a monogram was adopted.  The company was in operation until 1909.

Potter: George Scott

Biography

George and Rachel Scott emigrated to Cincinnati from Staffordshire England where both of their families had a long association with ironstone potteries.  Their factory was a converted tavern and sat on the land now occupied by the Cincinnati ball park.  The pottery was very successful making much undecorated white ware and some decorated with the Tea Leaf motif.  George Scott was a very successful potter and his products were widely distributed.  After his death, his daughter, Sarah, inherited the business and ran it with her husband who was also a potter by trade.

Also known as Dale & Davis

Messrs. Dale & Davis established Prospect Hill Pottery in 1880 and manufactured semi-porcelain and white granite dinner and bath ware until 1894.  Some marks included their full surnames Dale & Dales and later marks simply used their initials D & D.

Potter: Etruria Pottery

Biography

William Bloor founded Bloor, Ott & Booth in 1863 which operated under that name until 1865.  Then the company became known as Ott, Brewer & Bloor from 1865-t0 1870.  Then, in 1870 in the hopes of capitalizing on the popularity of English ironstone and earthenware, the factory was named Etruria Works and the company was known as Etruria Pottery & Co. (of Ott & Brewer Co.).  This company was in operation until 1893.

Body Style: Simple Pear

Biography

This small, squatty style features a bulbous pear-shaped body. Covered pieces are topped with an elegant round finial; tea service pieces have huge "C" shaped handles which appear to be out of proportion with the small body.

Body Style: Victory Shape (Dolphin)

Biography

Storybook dolphins grace the handles and finials of this basic square style with fluted corners. Why Mr. Edwards chose the name "Victory Shape" is not known. This style is one of the most collectible of the animal-feature shapes so popular in the 1880s.

NOTE: The word "Victory" is found impressed separately from the Edwards plume backstamp. It does not include the word "shape". Registered 1884.

Potter: Wick China Company

Biography

John Wick Jr. founded Wick China Company (1889-1913) as well as the town of Wickboro in Pennsylvania.  Prior to forming this pottery, Mr. Wick was one of the operators of Ford China company in Ford City, Pennsylvania.  Mr. Wick built a pottery, a school and donated land for commercial enterprises all to make the town that bore his name a viable entity.  The pottery. which was located on North Water Street in Wickboro, was destroyed in a fire in 1914.

Potter: Wheeling Pottery

Biography

Wheeling Pottery Co. (1879-1923) was organized by George K. Wheat, William A. Isert and Edward Meakin Pearson.  Mr. Pearson served as General Manager.  He was a former Staffordshire potter connected to many of the principal members of the pottery industry in England.  Wheeling Pottery became one of the largest potteries in the U.S. consisting of fifteen kilns and thirteen decorating kilns.
